Shipping will continue to be hampered by overcapacity
Due to the reduced age of the fleet, the weakening impact of ship demolition on supply capacity, and the completion of most policy-driven capacity elimination before 2012, overcapacity will likely accompany us for many years to come. The huge shipbuilding capacity further complicates the situation; shipbuilding giants like China can easily build capacity equivalent to 10% of the global fleet size annually. Therefore, even without economic downturn or global credit crisis, with so many new ships built excessively, shipping will ultimately not escape the industry's destined decline.

Ocean freight prices tripled in a year
On January 14th, Mr. Sun, the person in charge of a foreign trade company on Hong Kong Road in Qingdao, said that a batch of goods his company shipped to Europe a month ago had its delivery time delayed due to an additional order from the recipient. Unexpectedly, the shipping price had increased considerably in this short period. It is understood that after reaching its lowest point in April 2009, the shipping price has been rising, tripling by now.
During the World Expo, cargo ships on Shanghai's inland waterways must be equipped with VHF radios
During the World Expo, all cargo ships entering the inland waterways of Shanghai must install VHF radios, but must not illegally use high-power radios. Yesterday, the Shanghai Radio Management Bureau, Shanghai Maritime Bureau, and Changjiang Shanghai Communications Administration jointly held a "100-day pre-World Expo inland waterway radio management rectification activity." According to reporters, an investigation last December showed that about 50% of cargo ships entering Shanghai's inland waterways illegally installed high-power radios, which may interfere with the normal use of other radio communication equipment.
